CASE STUDY | A Leading Plant-based, Dairy-free Food Brand

Reframing Dairy-free Foods to Drive Renewed Category Growth

The Challenge

A leading plant-based, dairy-free food brand faced weakening category leadership as competition intensified and consumer skepticism grew around taste and texture. Functional health claims alone no longer differentiate products in the crowded market, and prior dairy-free messaging failed to motivate incremental adoption. Our challenge was to re-establish the brand’s relevance while driving measurable sales impact during a critical seasonal window.

The Strategy

We designed and executed a nationally representative consumer study to identify the true drivers of dairy-free purchase and avoidance. Our research revealed that taste confidence, ingredient quality, and emotional flexibility outweighed health claims, highlighting why prior messaging had underperformed. We translated these insights into a clear reframing opportunity: positioning dairy-free as enjoyable and inclusive rather than restrictive.

The Solution

We created and activated “Dairy-Free February,” repositioning the month as a feel-good, low-pressure alternative to rigid January health resets. The campaign included:

  • Launching a bold “Try Me” platform to reduce customer hesitation and encourage trial.
  • Orchestrating earned, paid, owned, and influencer efforts with a viral chef, proactive media outreach, product seeding, and social storytelling.
  • Developing a centralized campaign hub to anchor messaging and participation acrosschannels.

The Impact

The brand won over consumers, became synonymous with “Dairy-Free February”, and experienced a 13% bump in sales during the campaign.

  • Earned media efforts generated over 236.1M impressions and 1,700 media placements, allwith 100% positive sentiment.
  • Owned social media saw a 194% year-over-year increase in engagement and a 206% rise in engagement rate by follower, with approximately 117,000 impressions and 1,800 cross-channel engagements.
  • Influencer partnerships drove 125,000 impressions and achieved an average engagement rate of 2.6%.
